What do people actually use in the industry? What should be my attitude towards this situation? I don't want to close my mind on using ladder because I'm not used to it and because I have no experience in the Industrial automation world, but I don't want to use stuff just because "it's what people use". However, I'm his only employee at the moment, he will go forward with the best solution for the future and I have a heavy influence on the decision. My employer is poor and his clients are cheap, hence why we are looking for cheap PLCs. This makes the startup and installation on the plant more time costly.

Also, debugging in ladder is very slow as everything is spaced wide. Heck, you can't even do loops to iterate through arrays in a single cycle. I've seen Beckhoff's stuff, which I think is pretty last gen and ahead in the market, and there is no way you can do databases, web services, remote monitoring, and all other stuff using ladder. I think what I'm being told is what keeps the industry behind. I'm working with 45+ years old people and the Mechanical Engineer is telling me that I should do all my work in ladder because it's what people are using in the field and because of that it's easy maintenance if they don't have access to the programmer who did the job.

The best compromise I could come with is Eaton's easy4 series which can be programmed in Structured text, but you cannot change variable's name.

My second employer (who I'm making PC software for) wants to develop expertise in Industrial automation, and while searching for cheap Industrial PLCs, I am confronted with Ladder only IDE and fixed hardware variables. I still think the market is about 20 years behind. However, while exploring Industrial PLCs I can see that Codesys is very well developed for its market and CodeSys 3.5 is kind of good. I work on medium complexity project like Automated Cranes, Auto-leveling barge platform, automated synchronized winches, etc.īecause I'm used to program with Visual Studio in C++, I thought that software like Codesys were very basic, archaic and limitative. I'm using IFM products which are Rugged Field mobile PLCs. I have been using Codesys 2.3 for 6 years now and played a lot with Codesys 3.5. I'm a software programmer who happen to have a job in Hydraulic system automation (6 years now) and a second job as a PC software programmer (C++, web, database). I don't know any other Automation Engineer and that's why I'm asking you guys.

I need help to understand why Industrial PLCs are still mainly using Ladder (as I'm being told), and why I should comply.
